Excel Tutorial Lesson 15 | Relational Operators And Locking Cell Address

In our previous Excel Tutorial Lesson 14, we had discussed about cell reference and how to refer to a particular cell address when performing calculations in a spreadsheet. But today's lesson, we shall identify some excel relational operators and how to lock cell addresses when performing calculations in a spreadsheet. 

Relational operators are signs or symbols that represent mathematical operations used in excel. They are used to compare two or more numbers or strings in a logical way. Below are some useful excel operators you can use to compare numbers in your spreadsheet. 

Relational Operators And Their Signs or Symbols



  • Greater than >
  • Less than <
  • Not equal to <>
  • Greater or equal to >=
  • Less than or equal to <=

With the aids of the above signs you can create logical formulas/functions for comparing numbers in your excel spreadsheet. In our subsequent lessons, we shall use these relational operators to create complex and logical formulas.

Locking Cell Addresses


A cell address can be locked using the dollar sign $. When you lock a cell address, all other cell addresses can be referred to it for calculation purpose. 

For example if you have a list of 100 values and you want to multiply all of them by 2, you can simple write 2 in a cell box, and multiply all the values by 2. By so doing, all the values will be multiplying itself by that 2. Check out this example below.

On Column A, type 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. On row 1, type 1,2,3,4,5 as shown below.

Now in Cell B2, type this formula =A2*$B$1 then hit enter. as shown below. Remember to include a dollar sign in-front of the cell address you intend to lock. eg $B$1

It will return 4 as answer. Now when you click on the small box below left of the cell box that contains the answer and drag down.

It will automatically return the correct answers. Here the formula is multiplying the value of Cell A2 down to the value of Cell A8 by the value of Cell B1.

You should use the same formula to find the answers on column C, D and E. But make sure you remember to lock cell address C1, D1 and E1 respectively.
